Joseph Walsh

Joseph Walsh's work is a reflection of his passion for expression through the use of materials and forms. From massive scale sculptures to one-of-a-kind designs and site-specific editions, each piece in his dynamic collection reveals an intuitive connection with making, a sympathetic use of materials and an expressive engagement with form.Inspired by the effortless flowing, inspiring and constantly changing beauty that is found in nature, Joseph Walsh has developed a creative process which takes the spontaneity and dynamism of a sketch - of the moment of inspiration - and in which the final design is defined through the process of making.Joseph Walsh was born in 1979 County Cork on the south coast of Ireland where he established his own workshop and studio when he was 20 years old and continues to operate it today. He did not have formal education and began exploring his passion for making. He visited master woodworkers throughout Europe and gained his own understanding and mastery of the material. From the beginning, he was pursuing innovative design and manufacturing techniques based on traditional techniques that were often borrowed from other craft forms, which enabled new making methods and shapes. This resulted in numerous early commissions for various religious patrons, such as the Embassy of Japan as well as the National Museum of Ireland.
