Kim Basinger was born December 8, 1953, in Athens, Georgia, the third child of five. Both parents were active in entertainment. Her father had been a big-band jazz player and her mother been a water ballet performer in several Esther Williams movies. Kim was extremely reflective from the perspective of her father. Kim was shy as she was a young schoolgirl. Kim's parents encouraged her to begin ballet training at a young age. By the time she reached sweet sixteen, the once-shy Kim was a participant in the Athens Junior Miss contest. Kim was awarded the Junior Miss Georgia title and was invited to New York for the Junior Miss pageant. Kim was a model who was now a stunning 5'7" woman was offered a contract with Ford Modeling Agency. Kim, then 20, was a top model earning an average of $1,000 per day. In the 70s, she was a model of the highest caliber who appeared on many magazines' covers. Kim also appeared in hundreds of advertisements including the Breck girl. Kim studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse and performed in Greenwich Village clubs. She also sang under the stage name Chelsea. Kim was ready to take on Hollywood when she moved to Los Angeles in 1976.
