Heather Joan Graham was the daughter of James Graham, an FBI agent, and Joan (Bransfield), who were both teachers and authors of children's literature. The strict Catholic parents raised her along with their sister Aimee Graham. They moved frequently because of their father's occupation as a truck driver, and Heather began to shy. Surprisingly, her passion for acting was evident from a young age. Even though she was called"a "theater geek" by her peers, her senior class voted her Most Talented. However, her passion for acting caused conflict between Heather and her family although her mother obligingly drove her to audition for roles in Hollywood through her adolescence. After high school, Heather moved to Los Angeles and received small parts in a number of films, including Drugstore Cowboy (1989). Heather was able to decide to attend the University of California at Los Angeles for her drama degree after her career didn't grow as fast as she had hoped. She was found by James Woods at UCLA and was offered a part in Diggstown (1992) which was a film that Woods was also in. Heather left UCLA after two years in order to pursue acting full-time.
