It was the year after the 1968 Democratic convention and there was a casting notice for a film with several roles for the kind of young people who had disrupted the convention. Joe (1970) was auditioned in New York by two recent Catholic University graduates. Chris Sarandon, who had been studying to be an actor, was turned by the casting committee. His wife Susan received a major role. That part was played by Susan Compton, the daughter of an ad executive Bill Compton (Dennis Patrick). In the movie Dad Bill kills Susan's drug dealer friend and then befriends Joe (Peter Boyle)who is an obnoxious worker as an assembly line worker and also is a collector of guns.Five years after, Sarandon made the film which cult-classic fans have come to know her as Janet who is entangled with transvestite Dr. Frank n Furter in The The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). In the more than 15 years since starting her career, Sarandon at last actively campaigned for a role that she could be proud of.
