Ayn Rand, original name Alissa Zinovievna Rosenbaum, (born February 2, 1905, St. Petersburg, Russia--died on the 6th of March, 1982, New York, New York, U.S.), Russian-born American writer who was a commercial success with her novels that promoted individualism and laissez faire capitalism had a significant impact on libertarians and conservatives as well as with the younger generation throughout the United States from the mid-20th century.Her father, Zinovy Rosenbaum, was an incredibly successful pharmacist. Alissa Rosenbaum was the youngest child in a family of three. She was tutored at home and was enrolled in a progressive school where she had a high academic performance but was socially isolated. The shop of her father was confiscated by communist officials in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution of 1917. It was a decision she regretted. As a student at Leningrad State University, she was a historian and became familiar with the works of Plato and Aristotle. When she graduated in 1924 she enrolled in the State Institute for Cinematography, hoping to become a screenwriter.The announcement of a note from a cousin in Chicago gave her an opportunity to depart the country on the pretense of gaining knowledge that she could utilize in the Soviet film industry.
