Bettany Mary Hughes OBE, FSA (born May 1967) is an English historian journalist, author, and broadcaster with a specialization in classical history. Her books published include mythology and classical antiquity, and the history of Istanbul. She is involved in efforts to encourage the teaching of the classics in UK state schools. Hughes was awarded an OBE in 2019. Her birthplace was in West London. She is the sister and daughter of Simon Hughes, a journalist and cricketer. Hughes received her education at Notting Hill, Ealing High School, Ealing and St Hilda's College in Oxford. She is also the mother of a journalist and cricketer, Simon Hughes. In 2009, she won the Naomi Sargant Special Award in recognition of excellence in educational broadcasting In 2012, she was awarded the Norton Medlicott Award for services to history by the Historical Association, of which she is an honorary fellow.
