Jennifer Love Hewitt was the daughter of Patricia Mae (Shipp), who is a speech-language pathologist and Herbert Daniel Hewitt (a medical technician). She has English, Italian, French, Scottish, and German ancestry. She got her first name from her older brother Todd Daniel Hewitt (b. November 8, 1970), who picked the name after a little blonde girl who he later was in love with. Jennifer's middle name is Love that she has used offstage. The name was recommended by her college friend. Her parents separated when she was just six months old. Her mother raised her in Killeen Texas. When she was three she performed for the first time in her debut at a livestock show. She was 5 years old and started tap, ballet, and jazz lessons. This led to her being a part of the Texas Show Team which traveled Europe and the Soviet Union. The family moved to Los Angeles at the age of 10 with the help of talent scouts. Todd stayed behind to finish the high school level in Texas. Jennifer soon found work in commercials as well as a part on Disney's Kids Incorporated (1984) in 1989. She was through a number of television flops before finally hitting it big on Party of Five (1994) in 1995.
